PROJECT CODING

FALL 2018 STEM PROGRAM TARGETED FOR ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS

Studies have been conducted that show that college-bound females are less inclined to major in fields that involve the computer sciences. More specifically, minority females are almost completely absent from careers that are highly technical. The reasons behind this absence of women in the tech industry, White or non-White alike, has alot to do with interest and access. Project Girl Coding is a specific campaign designed to bring forth a level of curiosity and interest to girls in underserved communities in New York City. This project will aim to work with elementary and middle schools in New York City, both public and public chartered, to create STEM extracurricular programs such as robotics and game development activities. The nature of this project will involve the purchase of simple robotics and computing equipment.

Since the start of this pilot, I have been able to expand the program to male youths as well. Please review the images on the results page for a snapshot on how we are doing.

PROJECT OLYMPIAD

SUMMER SPORT CAMP INFUSION 2018 IS NOW ACCEPTING NEW APPLICATIONS AND WILL OPERATE VIA OUR SUBSIDIARY MIND GEMS SPORTS

Urban Youth Initiative believes in the power of sports. Children need physical activity. The correlation between academic achievement and the access to organized physical activites, is unprecedented. Unfortunately, in urban settings, access to organized activities are very limited. There are programs working to address this deficiency, however, there are still major shortcomings. Project Olympiad will work with LeAp NYC to supplement their summer and afterschool program.

The Urban Youth Initiative will supplement these programs by organizing site and age specific sporting and physical engaging activities. PROJECT OLYMPIAD commences July 11, 2018. Activities include Flag Football, Soccer, non-contact Boxing, Girls Rugby and age appropriate overall body conditioning. The program runs thru August 9th, 2018

PROJECT SUMMER BLISS 2019

TWO 5 DAY SESSIONS EXPERIENCING NATURE ALL WHILE LEARNING ABOUT IT. FUNDRAISING BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2018 THROUGH APRIL 2019.

Inner-city kids are often entraped within the neighborhoods from which they live in, rarely leaving the 20 block radius of their homes. January to January, from the start of the school year in September, to its conclusion in June, culminating with the hot city summer of July and August, many kids growing up within urban borders rarely get to see beyond it. For the summer of 2019, the Urban Youth Initiative will work to change that with your help. We are developing a plan of action to get upwards of 1,000 New York City middle school-aged kids outside of the city limits to either the Catskills or Adirondacks mountains for one of two 5 day camping excusions during August.

We are currently looking for partners such as the Fresh Air Fund and other similar programs to work with us on this endeavor

PROJECT UNIFORM 2018

UNIFORM DRIVE FROM AUGUST THROUGH DECEMBER 2018

As we welcome in the New Year, 2018 promises to be a good year for the Urban Youth Initiative's efforts to get it's participants ready for the 2018-19 school season. The school uniform drive of 2014 was the first step of a grand effort to see to it that students are more focused on learning than what is on their backs. The immediate goal now is for the organization to make the next Project Uniform broad enough to reach all of the children in our network. We will be accepting donations of new or gently used uniforms of all sizes, colors and gender styles all year round. We are also still accepting shoes. Now that the weather has changed, we are extending the drive to include children, teen and young adult jackets and coats.

UYI PROJECT'S OVERVIEW

PROJECT NOTEBOOK 2018

SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE FROM AUGUST THROUGH OCTOBER 2018

One of the most important items a student can have is a notebook. Too many New York City public school students begin the first day, week and month of school without sufficient school supplies: composition books, pencils, pens, loose-leaf paper, folders and suitable backpacks. We here at Urban Youth Initiative, with your help, will work to meet the need head-on and supply elementary and secondary students, who can demonstrate legitimate need, with material that will allow them to hit the ground running this new school year.
